Despite not being a federal holiday, the day is great for celebrating and learning about U.S. history, especially in preparation of July 4th. Exercise your brain muscles a bit and check out these 14 Flag Day fun facts: 1. The U.S. flag, in its first form, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress on June 14th, 1777. John Adams, second President of the U.S., described its thirteen stripes, alternate red and white and thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation. 2. U.S. Congressman Francis Hopkinson, who also signed the Declaration of Independence, is said to have created the first flag. Betsy Ross followed his pattern to sew the first version. 3. The flag was first flown on August 3, 1777, from Fort Stanwix in what became Rome, New York. 4. An 1818 Congressional legislation locked the number of stripes to 13 (to represent the thirteen original colonies) and decreed that the number of stars should equal the number of states in the Union. 5. In 1831, the flag was first nicknamed Old Glory by William Driver of the brig Charles Doggett, a sea captain from Salem, Massachusetts. Stars and Stripes is another common nickname. 6. Bernard J. Cigrand is considered as having an important hand in Flag Day. While its true that you dont need to read music to play the guitar, you should learn how to  read guitar chord charts. A guitar chord chart is a visual representation of a chord. This helpful visual is a little like music-by-numbers; it tells you which finger goes where  and on what string, so in case you come across a chord you dont know, youll  be able to play it. Heres an example of a guitar chord chart, also known as a guitar chord diagram: Guitar chord charts are a cinch to read once  you learn what all the lines, numbers, and circles mean. Are you ready to start learning how to play songs on the guitar? Here are 11 things you  need to read guitar fingering charts. 11 Tips for Reading a Guitar Chord Chart Visualization The grid of six vertical and five horizontal lines represents the  guitar fretboard. If youre having trouble understanding the basic layout of the  image above, hold your guitar in front of you so that the strings are facing you and  the headstock is pointing up. The image of the guitar chord chart represents this same view of your guitar,  with strings running vertically and frets horizontally. Which End Is Up? Guitar chord charts are  more commonly situated vertically (like above) rather than horizontally, especially  in songbooks. Its good to learn to interpret both vertical and horizontal grids  though. Righty or Lefty? Since guitar chord charts are  typically written for right-handed guitarists, they provide a challenge to left-handed players, who have to do a bit of re-visualization by flipping the chart  around. If a given source doesnt provide a left-handed version, you can download  left-handed guitar chord charts online. Chord Name The letter at the top of the chart is the name of the chord. Fingerings can also sometimes be found written along the bottom of the  strings of a chord chart, or between the nut mark and the chord name instead of  inside the dots. Xs and Os An X above the bolded nut mark indicates a string you dont  pick or strum. An O in the same location means to play the string open. Alternate Fingerings You may come across a suggested chord fingering that  you simply cannot contort your fingers to play. In this case try experimenting with  alternate fingerings. The most commonly used chord fingerings, however, will  work for most guitarists. How a Barre Chord Is Charted As you probably already know, barre chords  are chords that involve using one finger, usually your index finger, to hold down  multiple strings in a single fret simultaneously. A barre is noted on a guitar chord diagram by a curved or solid line running  through a fret from the first note to the last note of the chord, or by a series of dots  in the same fret that all bear the same number. Theres one truth you have to face as a musician: learning to play any instrument takes time.   Playing the guitar, as one example, requires time to build up your calluses, learn the guitar chords and strings, and work up to the dexterity needed to play certain songs.   If you have small hands, you may need to take some extra time to stretch your fingers or focus on specific guitar chords that give you trouble.   And of course, finding that perfect beginner guitar will take time, since there are so many options and personal preferences to consider. You will have to commit some time to really mastering your instrument, but dont let that stop you from learning!   Even if you only have ten minutes to get away from work, school or other responsibilities, that ten minutes can help!   The trick is to practice with purpose. Weve discussed effective practice here before setting specific goals, slowing down and using a metronome, and improving your sight-reading skills, for example.   Heck, you can even practice without your guitar, when youre out and about. So even on your busiest days, set aside that practice time.   And as you sit down, consider these 10 quick guitar exercises perfect for those short practice sessions, as suggested over on Fretterverse.com: 1. Chord Inversions Take one string group and one chord quality (m7, Maj7#5, etc.) and play all of the inversions for that chord in as many keys as you can on that string group. 2. Position Scales Pick a scale and play it in all 12 keys but only in one position. 3. Sweep Picking Control Choose an arpeggio and slowly work on keeping your picking hand consistent throughout the sweep so all of the notes are even in tempo and dynamics. 4. Intervals Pick a scale and play it in 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, or whatever interval you choose. 5. Sing and Play Sing a melody out loud, and then try to reproduce it on the guitar. Great ear training! 6. String Skipping Choose a simple major scale. Play every other note one or two octaves higher, which forces you to skip strings and concentrate on fingering and accurate picking. 7. Intonation Play a scale very slowly, and concentrate on getting your finger to nudge up against each fret every time. Make sure your pick strokes are clearly articulated and full. 8. Name That Note â€" Without looking, place your finger on any note on the fingerboard. Then look at the note and see how quickly you can identify the note name. 9. Commercial Jam If you happen to have the TV on while you are waiting around, you will inevitably hear music in the commercials or the show. Try playing along with it; learn the melody or figure out the chord progression and play along with it. 10. Name That Key Choose a key and name all of the notes. You can also do this with scales, modes, and chords. You prepare like crazy for that singing competition that you swear up and down youre going to nail. However, despite 30 minutes of scales first thing in the morning and an entire day in line spent practicing, you walk into the audition with your head held oh-so-high only to walk out feeling like your head was handed back to you on a lovely silver platter. Below are a few singers who didnt quite measure up to the singing competition they auditioned for. No worries though there is something to take away from each of these auditions that have gone horribly, horribly wrong. The Singing Souls What they lack in vocal quality, they sure make up for in confidence. They might say anybody can outsell the Spice Girls, but these girls really could have learned a thing or two about performing with stage presence had they had a chance to attend a Spice Girls concert. Although, the Singing Souls were most likely belting in diapers while the Spice Girls were out touring the world. Rhonetta Anybody can learn how to sing, but anybody cant be like me. Unfortunately, if youre going to want to compete with JLo and Mariah on the charts, youre going to need to know how to sing. One out of two aint bad, eh Rhonetta? J Star Valentine   Picking the right audition song can make or break your audition. Hes definitely got the look, but sometimes you just have to stick to what you know. Prepare your material months in advance, set aside plenty of time to practice every day, and power through your audition with confidence and poise.
